Our researchers, leaders, and educators are making headlines with their innovative work, including the catastrophic collapse of melting glaciers.

Scientists using ice-breaking ships and underwater robots have found the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is melting at an accelerating rate and could be on an irreversible path to collapse, spelling catastrophe for global sea level rise. The finding was possible because of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, a research project with many Principal Investigators including Dr. Jeremy Bassis, a professor at U-M Climate and Space. The news was covered in the article “Scientists looked deep beneath the Doomsday Glacier. What they found spells potential disaster for the planet” by CNN. | September 20, 2024
