CLaSP Special Seminar - Prof. Michael Balikhin

Date: January 11, 2019
Time: 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Location: CSRB 2238

Our guest for a CLaSP Special Seminar will be Prof. Michael Balikhin from the University of Sheffield (UK).

Title: "Cluster Contribution to the Physics of Quasi-Perpendicular  Collisionless Shocks."

Abstract: The aim of this talk is to review advances in the physics of collisionless shocks achieved by the Cluster project. During its eighteen year period of operations the inter spacecraft separation has changed from a few to a few thousand km, enabling the investigation of various unsolved problems in magnetospheric and space plasma physics. The aspects of Cluster's contribution to fundamental shock physics that will be covered include the transition from sub-critical to supercritical shocks, the spatial scales of electromagnetic fields within the front of a quasiperpendicular shock, spatial scales of electron heating, the relative roles of anomalous processes and "macro-fields" on energy redistribution within the shock front, and direct observations of shock front non-stationarity
