Title: "The National Climate Assessment: Informing Decisions and Understanding America’s Risks"

Abstract: The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) is a confederation of the science arms of 13 Federal agencies with global change responsibilities. It was created in 1989 as a Presidential Initiative and subsequently mandated by Congress (through the Global Change Research Act of 1990) to “assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change.”

One of the core responsibilities of USGCRP is to produce the National Climate Assessment (NCA), a quadrennial report that assesses global change and its impacts in the United States. The Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4) was produced in two volumes. NCA4 Volume I: The Climate Science Special Report was released in November 2017, and serves as an authoritative synthesis of climate change science for the United States. NCA4 Volume II: Impacts, Risks, and Adaptation in the United States, focuses on the impacts of global change to regions and sectors in the U.S. These two volumes were collectively written by hundreds of both Federal and non-Federal experts across a variety of disciplines and underwent several rounds of rigorous reviews. NCA4 features observed and projected changes in the United States, discuss the impacts and risks from these changes, and seeks to inform climate-relevant decisions across the country.

This talk will discuss the role of USGCRP in Federal climate research, key findings from the Climate Science Special Report, and the process and structure for NCA4 Volume II.
