Climate & Space student wins Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship Annareli Morales

Climate & Space is very pleased to announce that PhD candidate Annareli Morales has won a 2018-2019 Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship

The Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship is one of the most prestigious awards granted by the Rackham Graduate School. Doctoral candidates who expect to graduate within six years since beginning their degrees are eligible to apply, and the strength and quality of their dissertation abstract, publications and presentations, and recommendations are all taken into consideration when granting this award.

Annareli's research explores the forces that determine the amount and location of precipitation and cloud formation over mountainous regions. Specifically, she uses a mathematical modeling framework to simulate the flow of an atmospheric river over a bell-shaped mountain. For the past year, she’s been working alongside one of her PhD committee membersHugh Morrison, at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO. Morrison, a researcher in the NCAR Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory, is the developer of the microphysics parameterization which Annareli uses to study the sensitivity of mountain precipitation to changes in various microphysical parameters. Their work has recently been accepted in the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences. Annareli will stay at NCAR until her dissertation defense in Summer, 2019, and plans to use the additional year afforded by the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship to continue her research, the results of which will help forecasters better predict where and how much precipitation will fall.
